Calum Petrie reviews Deus Ex Universe: Children’s Crusade #5…
As TF29 heads into the Glasshutte for a final confrontation with the pro-aug forces, two questions remain in Adam Jensen’s mind: what will this mean for the future of augmentation and will the real conspirators ever come to light?

The stage is set, the players are in place and the action is settled on a hair trigger. The final issue of Deus Ex Universe: Children’s Crusade is set up perfectly for a showdown between the hostage situation of Augmented humans and the team of Task Force 29.
The eyes of the world are focused on the hostage situation within the Glasshutte, with the shock announcement discovered in the previous issue about to be aired to the world through a pirate video feed. Task Force 29 have been given strict orders to disable the situation with lethal force and secure loudmouth journalist Titus King from his hostage predicament. Adam Jensen is still focused on freeing the children and trying to limit the number of casualties, once again proving that the one person who is more machine than man, is by far the most human figure in this series.
Adam Jensen uses his contacts from outside of Task Force 29 to come up with an alternative strategy, second guessing his team and pushing for his own peaceful way out of all of this. Although the issue builds to some form of large and climatic battle, it ends up being all over rather quickly with the lethal precision of the task force, making the confrontation somewhat anti-climactic. Though it does go on to prove that the terrorist threat was much more effective when it was brainwashing children and making them into living weapons. When the dust settles Adam achieved all he could in the situations parameters, he receives very little if any thanks for minimising the body count and stopping an all out war from happening.
The comic has always laid of the predicaments that you would encounter within the computer game, while always choosing the most noble action in the comic it would be interesting to see and alternative ending.
This issue ends like most Deus Ex story lines, with one man talking to a group of screens. The Illuminati always win, though Adam Jensen is getting ever closer to them. To find out where the journey takes Adam next, you will have to buy Deus Ex: Mankind Divided to see what happens next for Task Force 29.
