Earlier this week Relativity Media finally found its leading man for the long-gestating remake of The Crow when Luke Evans (Immortals, Fast & Furious 6) was announced as having secured the role of Eric Draven in the latest retelling of comic book creator James O’Barr’s supernatural revenge tale.
Evans secured the role ahead of rumoured candidates such as James McAvoy (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), and the Welsh actor has wasted little time in discussing the forthcoming remake, which sees him stepping into the shoes of Brandon Lee, whose life was tragically cut short during the making of the original.
“[The Crow] was a very poignant film from my childhood, which I remember vividly,” Evans tells ComingSoon. “The soundtrack, also. It was such a solid performance that Brandon Lee gave. It was a very tragic end for somebody that probably would have had a very promising career… I’m Eric Draven [in the remake]. I’m the same character. Obviously, he’s been refreshed and brought up to date. We’re reimagining it to a certain extent, but the story and the plot is mostly the same.”
The Crow is to be directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez’s (Before the Fall) and is expected to go into production early next year. Meanwhile, we’ll be seeing plenty of Evans in this year; along with his villainous turn in the latest Fast & Furious, he’s also set to appear as Bard the Bowman in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which opens in December.
