Josh Trank to direct standalone Star Wars movie

June 4, 2014 by Gary Collinson

A couple of weeks back it was revealed that Monsters and Godzilla helmer Gareth Edwards has signed on to direct one of Disney’s standalone Star Wars movies and now Lucasfilm has announced that Josh Trank (Chronicle and the upcoming reboot of The Fantastic Four) is also heading to a galaxy far, far away for a spin-off feature.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” states Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

“The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood,” states Trank, who is currently shooting The Fantastic Four ahead of a release next summer. “The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”

So, how do you feel about Josh Trank directing a Star Wars movie? And how long before we get a “scoop” claiming Lucasfilm wants Michael B. Jordan for a young Lando Calrissian? Or, better still, a young Han Solo? Now that would really drive some traffic…
