Ahead of the Marvel Television Presents panel at the San Diego Comic-Con next weekend, SuperHeroHype caught up with Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas, showrunners of the upcoming Agent Carter TV show, and managed to get a few words about ABC’s latest venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
“The nice thing about Agent Carter being set in the ‘40s is it predates a lot of the Marvel universe. As you know, the guys who wrote Captain America 1, 2 and are now writing 3, wrote the pilot. So they know that universe very well. So I don’t feel like we’re hamstrung by anything. I think there’s a lot of room to play and a lot of room to be creative with the story,” said Fazekas, with Butters adding that: “It allows us, the movies were such a wonderful set up for the series. There is definitely something to draw on from Captain America 1 and 2, and hopefully that there are characters and people that are set up there that we’ll hopefully see in our universe. I think that she’s such a wonderful character. She’s strong, she’s independent, but she’s in a world where, after the war, strong and independent woman isn’t what people want. So I think there’s a fun emotional story that we get to play with in the series.”
After indicating that they’re open to Neal McDonough appearing as Dum Dum Dugan, Fazekas went on to discuss the behind-the-scenes talent on the show: “We’ve hired our writing staff. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote the pilot, will be on the show as much as they can be. They’ll be working on Captain America 3 as well so we’ll take them as much as we can get ‘em. They’re great guys. We have a great writing staff that we’ve worked with before on different shows, people that we never worked with before. Chris Dingess, who’s another executive producer who we worked with on Reaper, but directors and actors, we’re still in the process of making those deals.”
Meanwhile, Film Divider has posted what it believes to be the supporting cast of characters set to join Hayley Atwell’s Peggy in the series:
Deputy Director Roger Hooley is a hardworking, principled older man and Peggy’s boss. As you might expect, he’s bothered by ongoing problems in his personal life as well as the challenges of his day job.
Agent Jack Thompson is in his 30s, handsome and damn well knows it. The polar opposite of Dooley, he doesn’t take kindly to women in the workplace, nor how little recognition he gets. Worse, he wants Dooley’s job and is desperate to prove himself.
Edward Hutchins is a highly professional agent with an unusual problem; duplicity. He’s lying to his wife about what he does to stop her worrying. True Lies, SHIELD style.
Daniel Sousa is everything Jack Thompson wants to be. He’s a war hero who walks using a leg brace, but finds dealing with office politics to be harder than working around his injury. Sousa is also a fiercely honourable, gentle man and we’re betting he becomes one of Peggy’s major allies.
And outside of the agency, there’s Angie Martinelli. Working as an automat waitress, Angie dreams of being a singer. She’s a tough, compassionate young woman who is smart and loyal and seems set to be Peggy’s anchor to the world away from SHIELD.
