Will Black Widow be killed off in Avengers: Age of Ultron?

October 29, 2014 by Thomas Roach

Thomas Roach on whether Black Widow will be killed off in Avengers: Age of Ultron…

There was big news from Marvel yesterday as the studio announced its Phase Three line up which certainly has lots of fans excited, as well as giving us more information with which to speculate. Now we know what films will be coming out over the next few years, we can try to predict certain things that will happen, and one thing I am now predicting is that Black Widow will be killed off in Avengers: Age of Ultron. This is just speculation but hear me out…

Marvel have already confirmed that by the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, we shall have a new roster of characters in the Avengers line up. So we can expect there to be a massive falling out between characters which causes them to leave the team, or that we may be in for a death or two. With Captain America: Civil War confirmed we know that by the end of Age of Ultron Captain America will not be on good terms with Tony Stark. One of the things that may cause the split it the death of a teammate?

If so, it seems to be either Black Widow or Hawkeye. People forget that Jeremy Renner has been nominated for two Academy Awards and fans already recognise that Hawkeye is such a bad ass character and we don’t want to see him go. He has also had less films than Black Widow, which means he will likely get more before being cut. Joss Whedon has already teased that one of the Avengers will die, and between the two most likely candidates it will be Black Widow. Her death will be a catalyst that puts the events of the future films into motion.

Captain Marvel was also announced yesterday and will be the first female led Marvel film. Black Widow fans have been asking for a standalone film, but it looks like Marvel will not give us one. Maybe because she is being killed off? I would have thought that Marvel doing a female-led movie would be a risk, but it would be less risky if it was a Black Widow movie as she is already an established character. Sure Marvel is okay with taking risks, but there is definitely a market for a Black Widow movie and they have decided against it. The only reason I can think of is because she will be killed off.

Another thing that fans have picked up on is something from the Age of Ultron trailer. There is a shot of Hulk holding his hand up against Black Widow’s and there is a shot of the two characters standing next to each other at Stark’s party. There have been rumours for some time that the two will be romantically involved, and also speculation to why Hulk is fighting Iron Man? In the scene from the trailer, Hulk is only fighting Iron Man and not the rest of the Avengers. Hulk is really angry. Maybe he is so angry about Black Widow’s death? As Stark creates Ultron, which may lead to her death, he may be somewhat to blame. Personally, I think the two characters are fighting each other because Hulk is angry over Black Widow’s death.

Kevin Feige has spoken about Black Widow being an essential Avenger, but only after the question was brought up. Maybe he is telling the truth and she will live beyond Age of Ultron, but it woudln’t be the first time a studio has lied to keep the audience surprised. As always this is just speculation and this should not be taken as fact. I do think there is enough evidence to suggest that she may be killed off, although there may be plenty more information in the future that voids this argument.

Do you think Black Widow will be killed off in Avengers: Age of Ultron? Let us know…
