It’s been riding the hype train for the better part of 2014 and is expected to take in excess of $50 million this weekend, but it looks like Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar could be beaten out by Disney’s Big Hero 6 for box office supremacy.
As anyone who read our latest US box office report will know, it was very quiet over weekend with the biggest earner Nightcrawler taking just $10.9 million. The entire weekend in fact only took a total of $94 million. But, if projectionists are to be believed, the top two places this week could beat that total with Big Hero 6 also suggested to be taking over $50 million this weekend. And, they think it may just pass Interstellar.
Interstellar will have the IMAX inflation to bump up its numbers, but experts feel that the long running time will put off viewers who will opt to see the animated fun instead. This will be the fourth time in cinema history that an animated movie and live action movie have been pegged to take $50 million each, the previous battles being Monsters University/World War Z, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa/Prometheus and Wall-e/Wanted. In all three cases, the animated feature won.
Interstellar features a cast that includes Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club), Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises), Jessica Chastain (The Help), Michael Caine (Inception), Mackenzie Foy (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn), Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games), Casey Affleck (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3), John Lithgow (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Bill Irwin (Lady in the Water), David Gyasi (Cloud Atlas), Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream), David Oyelowo (The Butler) and Matt Damon (Elysium).
Big Hero 6 is directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) and features the voice talents of Ryan Potter (Supah Ninjas) as Hiro Hamada, Scott Adsit (30 Rock) as Baymax, T.J. Miller (Transformers: Age of Extinction) as Fred, Jamie Chung (Sin City: A Dame to Kill For) as Go Go Tomago, Genesis Rodriguez (The Last Stand) as Honey Lemon, Damon Wayans Jr. (The Other Guys) as Wasabi and Maya Rudolph (Saturday Night Live) as Aunt Cass. The film is set for release on January 30th 2015 in the UK.
