Fox has acquired an untitled comedy-adventure film focusing on Tinker Bell, the fairy sidekick of Peter Pan, and have cast Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Tammy) in the role. Shawn Levy, who directed by Night at the Museum films and Real Steel, is on board to helm the project.
Deadline describes the film as a “fresh take” on the iconic character, which was originally pitched by Levy himself and will be fleshed out by McCarthy. Sex Tape, The Muppets, and Get Him To The Greek scribe Nicholas Stoller is on board to write the script.
Levy, who’s latest movie Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb hits theaters next month, has yet to pick his next project, but has a few options at his disposal. He was recently attached to a modern retelling of the Arabian Nights story 40 Thieves for Fox, and Warner Brothers’ Minecraft adaptation. Deadline suggests that Tinker Bell could take priority, with a star and writer already attached.
Now the only question is, will Levy, McCarthy and Stoller be able to craft an interesting “comedy adventure” around Tinkerbell, or will the project turn out to be a feature-length rehash of SNL’s “Tonkerbell” sketch? Time will tell.
