A few days ago, Captain America: The First Avenger star Hugo Weaving was asked about the possibility of him returning as the Red Skull in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, with his reponse that “we’ll just have to wait and see” seemingly indicating that he’d softended his stance towards another outing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, it seems that isn’t quite the case, as Weaving has now told IAmRogue that his “views have not changed” and he still has little interest in returning to the franchise:
“You never know what might or might not happen. But my views have not really changed. I certainly have not had any conversations with anyone about that. No change at all on that landscape. I was talking to you about another Matrix, and I doubt that would happen. But there are always circumstances. Certain circumstances do change, and there is always a good reason to revisit or reinvestigate something. It may not be worth following, but it is always good to keep your options open and your mind open. Having said all of that, I have not really changed my opinion about not wanting to do another Captain America. It was fun to do. It was a very great thing to do in many ways, but I suppose my focus is more likely to be elsewhere, but who knows.”
Captain America: Civil War is set for release May 2016. The film is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and so far stars Chris Evans (Captain America), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), Frank Grillo (Crossbones) and Daniel Bruhl (Rush) in an as-yet-unrevealed villain role. Meanwhile Sebastian Stan (The Winter Soldier), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and Anthony Mackie (Falcon) are also expected to appear.
