Coinciding with the news that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Doctor Strange, Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) has reportedly nabbed the role of Jessica Jones in Marvel’s upcoming Netflix series of the same name according to Deadline. Ritter was said to be under consideration for the role alongside other actresses including Alexandra Daddario and Teresa Palmer.
Apparently the final choice was between Ritter and Palmer who both did readings with The Following’s Mike Colter, who is a contender for the role of Luke Cage in one of the four series Marvel is producing with Netflix. Jessica Jones is being developed by Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight), and is the second project in the deal between Marvel and Netflix.
“Jessica Jones a superhero suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, which leads to her hanging up her costume and opening her own detective agency, where she ends up helping people and assisting other superheroes.”
The first Marvel-Netflix series Daredevil will debut in May 2015, with Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist following over the next few years and building to a team-up for The Defenders.
Update: It is also being reported that Mike Colter has nabbed the role of Power Man for the Luke Cage series, with the character set to feature in Jessica Jones beforehand.
Update 2: Ritter has now officially been confirmed by Marvel, with Head of Television Jeph Loeb stating that: “Krysten Ritter has the type of range, spanning the comic to the tragic, that makes for the stuff of the best Marvel heroes. As Jessica Jones, Krysten will bring one of the most beloved new characters of the past decade to life in a way we know will delight her longtime fans and introduce her to many more.”
