James Cameron delays first Avatar sequel until 2017

January 14, 2015 by Thomas Roach

Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time and it’s been known for a while now that director James Cameron has been working on three sequels to the blockbuster which he intends to shoot back-to-back, releasing one a year and release one each year. The first one was set for release at the end of 2016, but due to writing pressures Cameron has delayed Avatar 2 until late 2017.

Cameron who is currently leading the writing team in New Zealand told ABC News: “There’s a layer of complexity in getting the story to work as a saga across three films that you don’t get when you’re making a stand-alone film. We’re writing three simultaneously. And we’ve done that so that everything tracks throughout the three films. We’re not just going to do one and then make up another one and another one after that,” he said. “And parallel with that, we’re doing all the design. So we’ve designed all the creatures and the environments.”

Are you disappointed that the Avatar sequels have been delayed? Let us know…
