Spider-Man to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Infinity War?

January 14, 2015 by James Garcia

UPDATE – Sony have since denied these rumours

Anyone who’s been on the internet over the last few months has seen the countless rumors swirling about the future of Spider-Man on film. Thanks to the disappointing reception of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the flood of leaked internal documents from the very public Sony hack, we’ve heard everything from a proposed Aunt May solo film, an all-female team-up dubbed “Glass Ceiling,” a “soft reboot” of the property within the Sinister Six film, and potential crossover with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Last we heard, Sony and Marvel were nearing some kind of deal that would either give the latter studio the rights back to the character, or allow the wall crawler to exist within both the MCU and his own solo films made by Sony. Sony was expected to hold some kind of “Spidey Summit” this month, and now it seems that things might be coming together.

According to Latino Review, the Marvel/Sony deal “went through,” and the friendly-neighborhood web slinger will join the ranks of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War Part 1.

The report is filled with information that could spoil some major events of the next few Marvel films, but it basically boils down to this: By the time Infinity War comes around, the Avengers team will have been dramatically changed up. That makes sense, considering that two major events on the horizon are Captain America: Civil War in 2016 and Thor: Ragnarok in 2017. That will allow room for the core Avengers team to change, and pave the way for Spider-Man’s MCU debut.

Now, it’s worth noting that – despite landing some big scoops in the past – Latino Review’s report should be taken with a massive grain of salt. The story is filled with wording like, “I can’t attribute any of this to a person, company or leak,” “everything I discuss here is currently in the works,” and “I’m not saying I know anything about this movie but…” So, take that as you will.

If this is true, it sounds like Andrew Garfield will be recast, and it’s unlikely that this new Spider-Man will have anything to do with the Amazing Spider-Man films. What that means for the current franchise, or Sony’s ownership of the property, is still unclear.

As always, we’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops. For now, it’s filed as a rumor, but it’s definitely one that makes sense. Tell us, would you be happy about this? Sound off in the comments below.
