We heard from original Ghostbusters co-writer and star Dan Aykroyd yesterday about his thoughts on Paul Feig’s reboot, praising it for empowering women. But while it looked like the long-gestating Ghostbusters 3 was over due to the announcement of the reboot, Dan Aykroyd has other plans.
“There’s three drafts of the old concept that exists,” Aykroyd told Interro Bang (via /Film). “And we’re going to be able to salvage some of it and use it. Yeah, we’re gonna be able to use it some day. Let’s get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise and then we’ll go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it.”
Akyroyd spoke late last year about the possibility of treating the Ghostbusters series like Marvel does with its interconnecting universe. But what does he make of Paul Feig’s new vision for his idea?
“I can tell you, as the originator, I’m very happy with what [Feig’s] done,” he said. “It’s very tasteful and it needed a reworking. The thing needed a new engine. You know? It needed new exhaust. It needed new steering. And this is what we’re getting.”
Ghostbusters is set for release on July 22nd, 2016 and will be directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids) with a cast that includes Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Melissa McCarthy (The Heat), Leslie Jones (We Are Family) and Kate McKinnon (Satrurday Night Live).
