It was to be expected given that it set all kinds of pre-release sales records, but now the numbers are in and it’s official: Fifty Shades of Grey is a massive success for Universal and Focus Features, with the film pulling in a huge $240 million opening weekend around the globe.
The adaptation of E.L. James’ steamy bestselling debuted in 55 international markets, earning $158 million and setting a record for the biggest opening for an R-rated release. Throw in a projected $90 million domestic haul over the Presidents Day holiday, and the $40 million movie is already comfortably in the black.
