Andrew Newton reviews Miami Vice: Remix #1…
Iconoclastic creators Joe Casey and Jim Mahfood turn the world of Miami Vice on its head in a way that’s got to be seen to be believed! Detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs are taking on crime in a city rampant with danger at every turn! An ’80s classic is now a Lion Forge reimagining for a bold, new audience!

Palm trees, sunshine, calm blue sea and lovely pink flamingos that was the starting of the wonderful 80’s show, Miami Vice. So too was the first page of the new series from IDW and Lion Forge Comics. Being a huge fan of one of the best (if not the best) cop shows of its time I was quite excited to be getting Miami Vice: Remix #1 to review and I was hoping, praying it would be like the original show and not take traits from the dodgy excuse of a film.
The first page was a great start, I could almost hear the theme tune. The strong use of vivid colours normally associated with the 80’s was great (well done Justin Stewart) and the use of imagery such as beaches filled with women with small bikinis and big hair is used to full effect. Jim Mahfood has certainly done well in capturing the ’80’s in his art.
The story by Joe Casey is good, it certainly resonates well with the latter series of the tv show to start with but seems to become a bit more extreme as it progresses with the effects of a new drug hitting the streets seeming completely bizarre and out of touch with the Miami Vice universe somehow. As for the characters of Crockett and Tubbs, it doesn’t seem like them in some ways and there is too much swearing which also isn’t like the original pair. It was great to see Elvis make an appearance and exhibit the same characteristics that made him become a much loved side character.
This certainly isn’t one for the Miami Vice purists out there. Some things, like those details mentioned above, will rankle those who expect this to be an extension of the existing Miami Vice universe. Although IDW do say that they ‘turn the world of Miami Vice on its head…’ and they do. Despite this though, Miami Vice: Remix #1 is an enjoyable read, its colourful, full of action and an interesting storyline that I’m looking forward to seeing progress.
