Kevin Smith Instagramed a photo the other day that confirmed he would be going back to the mall along with Jason Mewes (Jay), Michael Rooker (Mr. Svenning) and Stan Lee. Smith has said that he has reached out to all of the original cast, and now he’s confirmed another member of the original Mallrats crew.
Taking to Twitter, Smith posted a picture of him posing alongside Shannen Doherty, who played Rene in the original movie, to confirm that Doherty will be returning for Mallrats 2. Doherty also confirmed this herself on Kevin Smith’s podcast Hollywood Babble On. Doherty was a surprise appearance on the podcast, which was recorded in Canada where she just so happened to be at a fan expo, and when Smith asked her on stage if she was going to be in the movie, she replied, “f**k yeah.”

Smith has been very open about the troubles he had working with Doherty on the set of Mallrats, but it seems as though those troubles are now behind them. The other “7” in Smith’s tweet would be Jason Lee (Brodie), Jeremy London (T.S.), Claire Forlani (Brandi), Joey Lauren Adams (Gwen), Renee Humphreys (Tricia), Ethan Suplee (Willam) and Ben Affleck (Shannon).
Mallrats was released in 1995 and was Kevin Smith’s first studio film after indie sensation Clerks. The film was a huge flop at the box office, but earned a cult status. Smith has said that he is doing the movie as a tribute the producer of the original movie, who passed away last year.
