The Marvel Cinematic Universe could see a LGBT character “in the next decade or sooner”

June 30, 2015 by Gary Collinson

Having come under criticism for a perceived lack of diversity, Marvel Studios looks to be taking steps to address that with Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which will include solo movies for Black Panther and Captain Marvel. However, while we may be seeing the expansion of black and female characters, the MCU is yet to introduce a LGBT character, and following the U.S.’ landmark marriage equality ruling, Marvel chief Kevin Feige has been asked when we might see that rectified.

“Well in the drawing board going up to 2019 it remains to be seen. The comics always make the path that we get to have the fun of saying, ‘Yeah let’s choose this way or let’s choose this way’ and I think there are a lot of cool things happening in the comics now that—it’s usually a five to ten-year cycle between when something happens in the comics and when we can do it in the movie, sometimes a little less, but Civil War is certainly about the 10-year mark. Winter Soldier, I think, was around that time. So we always look at stuff that’s happening in the comics and go, ‘Where could we do that?’ Sometimes it’s sooner, but there’s no reason why that couldn’t happen in the next decade or sooner.”

So, with Marvel having laid out its plans through to 2019, it would seem difficult for the studio to introduce a LGBT character from the comic books, at least in a major role… but that doesn’t mean they couldn’t alter the sexuality of another character, does it? Or should they stick to what’s established in the source material? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
