It was looking to have a strong opening, but the animated feature Hotel Transylvania 2 has passed all expectations, breaking September opening records in the process.
The movie opened to around $47 million domestically, shooting it straight to the number one position. It broke the previous record of $42 million which, funnily enough, was held by its predecessor Hotel Transylvania. The movie also added $29 million from its worldwide screenings, giving the movie a grand total of $76 million on its opening weekend. Not bad at all.
Hotel Transylvania 2 was expected to do well, but many felt it would struggle against Everest following its stellar IMAX opening last weekend. However, that movie stumbled at the box office, most likely due to the popularity of Hotel Transylvania 2.
