A third instalment in the record-breaking animated franchise Hotel Transylvania hasn’t officially been announced just yet but with the second movie taking in over $48 million in its opening weekend, it seems likely that Sony will want to cash in on a trilogy and confirm details sooner rather than later.
If and when Hotel Transylvania 3 actually happens, director and animator Genndy Tartakovsky has admitted in an interview with The Wrap that he won’t return, “Hotel Transylvania 3 is going to happen without me…Two is enough. I have a lot of other ideas, and I kind of have to express them and have them come out.”
Tartakovsky’s next project was scheduled to be a CG reboot of Popeye but the director left the project back in March because he and the studio had very different ideas about the movie. It can’t have been easy for Tartakovsky to walk away as he previously admitted, “I’m very excited to work on Popeye, a character that I’ve loved since I was a kid.”
It’s likely that he will now move ahead on an original animated feature film for Sony called Can You Imagine? which was announced last year. Can You Imagine? is being described as a fantastic journey through one boy’s imagination. Although there are little details on the project, Tartakovsky spoke briefly last year, revealing that he was “looking forward to developing an entirely new and original animated feature here at Sony Pictures Animation. This is an exciting time for me and for the studio.”
