After revealing the first bit of footage at Disney’s D23 (watch our breakdown of that footage here), Marvel dropped the first official trailer for Captain America: Civil War. You can watch the trailer here, and read the thoughts of the Flickering Myth writing staff below:
Chris Cooper: ‘He’s my friend’, ‘So was I’. A lot of weight behind those words. Sure, the trailer had great looking action etc, but it felt like the events really matter to the characters. I’m looking forward to this. Bucky and Steve wailing on Tony is a fantastic looking fight too.
Rob James Kojder: That bit where Captain America and The Winter Soldier were pummeling the shit out of Iron Man was glorious. Movie should deliver
Tom Beasley: Struggling to keep my shit together if I’m honest. It’s amazing. More seriously, though, it looks like Civil War is going to have all of the elements that made The Winter Soldier such a surprising movie. It looks to be brave with its politics and isn’t afraid to show events taking a serious emotional and intellectual toll on characters, even though those characters spend a lot of time running around fighting with super-weapons. This is a brave direction in which to take the MCU and, personally, I’ll be glad of a little break from the Infinity Stones.
Vilordsutch: Already I feel that this film is going to rate highly in my favourite Marvel films. After the disappointment of the noise filled Age of Ultron mess, I’m looking forward to a darker return within Captain America. As we witnessed in The Winter Solider this series can really place it’s foot in the mature side of the Marvel Universe and these short minutes have already sparked my interest.
Eddy Gardiner: Well, it made me want to see it. Solid trailer. Teases plenty of cracking action sequences and promises a film as interesting as The Winter Soldier. I wonder if RDJ earned more for a Cap movie than Chris Evans…
Luke Owen: Given that he made 4x as much as Evans did for Avengers: Age of Ultron and Cap had the most screentime, I’d imagine so. I’m just glad to see that Cap is the focus of the movie, which should put a lot of worries to rest.
Really loved the trailer. It was slightly different to the D23 footage which I really liked as it makes that footage seem more special and unique to the event. Action looks good and the showdown between heroes should be epic. Take all my money now. RDJ’s line at the end was spectacular.
Jessie Robertson: Yes, yes and more yes
Amon Warmann: The final 10 seconds were the icing on a very satisfying 2 minutes + of footage. The Winter Soldier is the best film in the MCU, and this looks like it might eclipse it. Should start Phase 3 with a bang.
Scott J Davis: Very pleased that the focus was on Cap and the story, rather than pushing the fact it’s just Avengers 3. But love Downey Jnr in this already, so very excited!!
Sadé Green: The Captain America arc of the Marvel Universe is already so much better than the other bits. This trailer looks so exciting! It literally looks frikking awesome! I can’t wait!
Ricky Church: While I was very excited for this movie, I had a couple reservations about it. I was worried that Cap and Bucky would be pushed to the background, not only fighting other Avengers but also for screentime. Needless to say, the trailer lessened those concerns as Cap and Bucky were the trailer’s primary focus. While it is just a trailer and the final cut could prove different, I’m already confident Civil War won’t be stolen from Cap. Another aspect that really impressed me was the way it looked. The Russos made The Winter Soldier the best Marvel movie with its cinematography, themes and especially great action pieces. They look to continue that in Civil War, once again combining practical stunts and effects with the CGI. I could watch the final sequence of Cap and Bucky vs Iron Man on loop all day. Hopefully the final cut will keep its focus on Cap, but it looks like the Russos will once again deliver.
Mark C: Like most I was worried about the character bloating effect, but the central friendships and conflicts in the trailer really score on the emotional involvement stakes (not to mention the punch-ups). And that’s saying something with a 2.5 minute timeframe. Ironically the darkness/seriousness of the other titanic superhero showdown over at DC seems to have bled a little into Civil War. And with this storyline, it’s all the better for it.
Kris Wall: I hate to be the pessimist in this party but I just get less excited and more underwhelmed with each Marvel trailer, post Guardians of the Galaxy. It looks good, that three way between Cap, Stark and Bucky looks epic and I’ll obviously still see it, but I’m just not excited for it like I want to be. Think I’m coming down with Marvel fatigue, which is why I’ve only just gotten around to watching Ant-Man, as I had nothing else to watch. I promise I’ll be excited for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Luke Owen: I was going to say, if you’re getting Marvel fatigue when there’s only two in a year, imagine what you’ll be like when there’s 3 or 4 along with the DC and Fox’ line-up.
Kris Wall: Hopefully they’ll shake up the formula a bit. Only Suicide Squad and X-Men: Apocalypse interest me from their line ups at the moment.
Anghus Houvouras: I’m Marvel fatigued. Every Marvel movie seems to be the heroes origin story or the heroes fighting one another. Early on I would have said they ‘mismanaged’ the villains, but now I’m going to start using the word ‘bungled’. You can’t have your heroes fighting each other in every damn movie. Did you know there’s a villain in Civil War? You wouldn’t from that trailer. Because once again Marvel Studios believes the key to success is having our favorite heroes fight one another. It’s getting old, quick.
Luke Owen: I wouldn’t say that the heroes fight each other in every movie, and I think you’re not giving them enough credit for each film at least feeling different. The Winter Soldier wasn’t the same film as Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World or Guardians of the Galaxy. And you’re only assuming Baron Zemo is the ‘main villain’, he could just be in the Batroc role was in The Winter Soldier. Just playing devil’s advocate (arguably Al Pacino’s finest performance).
Anghus Houvouras: They didn’t all start that way, but it feels like where they’re going. They’re shoe-horning in Avengers movies into the one offs. That should be concerning.

Matthew Skeen: I’m excited with the Russo’s back at the helm of a Marvel movie. I don’t want to set too much store by the trailer considering how much Age of Ultron disappointed compared to the trailer by turning into a quipping fest of one upsmanship but I don’t see this going that way. Cap appears to be back to being a serious dude, some great looking fights, plus the return of William Hurt! I’m cautiously optimistic right now.
Helen Murdoch: The Winter Soldier was brilliant and I can’t wait for this film. I was a bit sceptical that it would feel like another mini Avengers but that 2 minutes proved me wrong!

There you have it. A mostly positive reaction to the movie, especially following the positivist surrounding Captain America: The Winter Soldier. There are a couple of naysayers, but we’re going to say this is a win for the Marvel camp based on the Flickering Myth Reaction.
