After scoring the biggest single day in history on Friday, it was all but assured that Star Wars: The Force Awakens would topple Jurassic World’s $208.8 million for the largest domestic opening weekend of all time, with the J.J. Abrams-directed blockbuster earning $238 million in North America.
Final weekend numbers are due tomorrow, with some distributors suggesting it could go as high as $245 million. The feat is all the more remarkable given that the previous record opening for December was just $84.6 million, set by The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Globally, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has pulled in $517 million, giving it the second biggest worldwide opening behind Jurassic World’s $524.9 million, although final box office adjustments could give it the edge. However, unlike Jurassic World, The Force Awakens’ opening weekend did not include China, where the film will open in January.
