Colin Trevorrow promises satisfying reveal of Rey’s parentage in Star Wars: Episode IX

January 13, 2016 by Robert Kojder

J.J. Abrams may know a few details about Rey’s parents from Rian Johnson, but if this recent interview with Colin Trevorrow on Entertainment Tonight is anything to go by, we may not get the answers until Star Wars: Episode IX.

Trevorrow promises a satisfying reveal stating “I’ve seen all of the theories… What I do know is that we’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying, because Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens but in the entire galaxy, and she deserves it. So we’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was—it’s something that happened a long time ago [in a galaxy] far, far away, we’re just telling you what happened.”

The wording of that response essentially implies that he is the one tasked with giving us the answers, but it could always be a collaborative effort across the remaining two films in the trilogy.

Trevorrow also said “By the time we get to Episode IX, I look at that movie as one movie, as three movies, as six movies, and as nine movies. It’s something that needs to honor a story that has been told over a period of 40 years… Star Wars is a belief system, it’s not just a story and it’s not just a movie, and it’s something I take very seriously.”

Filming on Star Wars: Episode VIII gets underway this month and sees Rian Johnson (Looper) taking over directing duties. The film is scheduled to arrive on May 26th 2017, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story also incoming on December 16th 2016.
