Star Wars: The Force Awakens becomes only the third movie ever to gross $2 billion worldwide

February 7, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Having become the first release ever to gross $900 million at the North American box office this past Friday, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has now achieved another milestone, with the movie crossing the $2 billion mark worldwide today.

It’s only the third time ever that a film has reached the landmark figure, with James Cameron achieving the feat twice with Titanic ($2.187 billion) and Avatar ($2.788 billion). However, it is unlikely that The Force Awakens will have enough left in the tank to knock either of those from their current positions and will surely have to settle for third in the list of the highest-grossing movies of all time, leaving Cameron as the king of the box office world.
