The Flickering Myth Team React…
While we wait patiently for Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, we’ve got another outing into our favourite galaxy far, far away in the form of Gareth Edward’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The film hits cinemas this December, but we got our first look at it yesterday via a teaser trailer [watch it here].
We’ve got another badass female in the lead, Ben Mendelsohn as the film’s big bad and Forest Whitaker doing his Ghost Dog things. But what did the Flickering Myth staff make of it?
Scott Watson: Watched it six times already and it looks dark, moody, brooding, brutal, those AT-ATs on the beach… Shadow Troopers… that is Shadow Troopers right? My mind just kinda went BOOM. Never thought they could top the hype for Star Wars: The Force Awakens but this… WOW
Neil Calloway: For a film that’s going to end with a character saying “just shoot in the exhaust port”, it looks good.
Jake Wilson: Another great female lead, by the looks, a great feel and Ben freakin’ Mendelsohn! Couldn’t be more excited now.
Scott J Davis: Looks pretty good – love Mendelshon and the rest of the cast is great. Be interesting to see how it all ties on. AT-AT’s on beach!! Also, did they use Canary Wharf tube station as the Death Star??
Kat Kourbeti: Awesome trailer! Love that the new Star Wars films are fronted by awesome ladies. I love Felicity Jones’ character already, can’t wait for December. And yes! Canary Wharf represent!
Tom Jolliffe: I had almost no interest in this before seeing that trailer. Now I’d quite like to pre-order a ticket. It looks pretty damn good.
Anghus Houvouras: Damn this looks great. So much more excited for these kind of Star Wars movies instead of the ongoing saga of the Skywalker family. Expanded Universe FTW.
Gary Collinson: Incredible trailer. They have done a fantastic job tying the sets and costumes into A New Hope. And I cannot wait to see Ben Mendelsohn’s villain. Very excited about this.
Kris Wall: Really excited to see Mads Mikkelsen, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen and Forest Whittaker in this universe. Completely bored of Felicity Jones though now. Having said that, I thought the visuals in this trailer looked better than anything I saw in all of The Force Awakens, so I’m pretty excited to see more
Kirsty Capes: Echoing the above sentiments of badass female leads in sci fi. Casting Felicity Jones is a stroke of genius so kudos to whoever thought that one up. I wasn’t overly fussed about Rogue One, but now this trailer has got me super psyched. This is going to be a lovely palette cleanser before Star Wars: Episode VIII drops.
Ricky Church: This looks much better than I expected! The visuals look amazing, great look and feel to this film. The visual callbacks to A New Hope are great, it really does feel like we’re back in the Original Trilogy here. The cast looks amazing as well, I already love Felicity Jones’ character and can’t wait to see what she does, but Ben Mendelsohn looks awesome. From his appearance, I’m guessing he’s a Grand Admiral, the first we’ve seen in actual Star Wars canon now. I remember at last year’s Star Wars Celebration, Gareth Edwards had said he wanted to bring the Wars back to Star Wars and just by this one trailer, it looks like we’ll get some delivery of that promise. The AT-ATs on the beach were very cool, I’m really excited to see Rogue One. Hopefully it does well because I think the future of other Star Wars anthologies will be dependent on Rogue One‘s success.
Andy Naylor: Looked very dark and adult. I was very impressed with it. The sets and from A New Hope look great. Enough new stuff mixed in with classic stuff to please everyone. This looks like it has some real promise.
Villordsutch: This really looks quite excellent from this snippet alone, especially loved the show of the Death Star being constructed. I’m very much looking forward to seeing the Stormtroopers being a true opposable force.
Matthew Skeen: This had a feel to it that hasn’t seen in Star Wars since The Empire Strike Back. The Empire seems like such a huge, truly threatening entity again. That maybe the shots of the Death Star and the AT-AT’s but I’m really intrigued by the mood this trailer has set.
Gav Logan: Wow! This looks amazing. The tone and visuals gave me goosebumps. Will be refreshing to watch a Star Wars movie that isn’t concentrating on Jedi/Sith
Helen Murdoch: Looks amazing. A bit darker in tone then Awakens! Can’t wait to see what Mendelsohn does.
James Garcia: I absolutely love this trailer! The film itself looks gorgeous, and the darker, more foreboding tone is extremely exciting. It’s also refreshing to see a Star Wars film that doesn’t revolve around the Skywalkers or Jedi. Hell, there isn’t even a lightsaber in the trailer – that’s gotta be a first. I was excited for this, but now I think it’s officially my most anticipated film of the year. I also love that, going forward, audiences will be able to look at Stormtrooper helmets to tell what time period we’re in. It’s so great seeing AT-ATs, classic troopers, and imperial officers on screen again.
Chris Cooper: Bloody hell.
Kat Kourbeti: Succinct and to the point.
Chris Cooper: I usually do 100 word reviews. Only needed two this time!

Usually, we would do a Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and Thumbs in the Middle score, but every single one of our writers was positive about the trailer for Rogue One: A Star War Story. That’s never happened in the time we’ve been doing these reactions. I don’t even think that happened with the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. So, why don’t we get a selection of what you’ve said to us:
@flickeringmyth yeah looks great! So nice to see all the original costumes back again.
