Joss Whedon teases his next movie, open to directing female-driven Avengers film

May 26, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Since making a “completely clean break” from the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Avengers: Age of Ultron, Joss Whedon has been chipping away at the script for his next movie, and while details are being kept tightly under wraps, the filmmaker has teased the project during an interview with The Wrap.

“It is a story about a girl who goes through some unbelievable shit,” said Whedon. “And that much is all I can say. It is an original screenplay that is very different from everything I’ve ever done except for that it’s exactly the same. It’s the first time in my life I’m writing without a sort of studio audience rating — without a plan. I’m just writing about something I care about, so it’s a little terrifying and it’s taking a little longer. But I think it will be good!”

Whedon was also asked whether he’d have any interest in returning to the MCU – specifically, if there was the opportunity to helm a female-driven Avengers movie: “Yeah, of course. Although I tend more towards the Jessica Jones-ey kind of stories than the delightful Supergirl stories that my daughter wants.”

Asked for his thoughts on the upcoming Captain Marvel movie finally introducing a female-led movie into the MCU, Whedon replied that: “Kevin Feige fought a mighty fight to get her on the schedule. So it’s a start. You could say that should be a middle, but it’s a start.”
