While the third film in the current Star Trek film franchise, Star Trek Beyond, isn’t slated to hit theaters until later this summer, Paramount has already begun its preparations for a possible sequel. As discovered by Trek Movie, the studio has just registered the title Star Trek 4 with the MPAA.
So, unless we’re about to see some kind of resurgence for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, it’s safe to say that the studio is at least hopeful that the latest adventure of the starship Enterprise will be a success, despite some middling responses to the film’s theatrical trailer, and the studio’s apparent reluctance to show any more marketing materials.
This isn’t an official green light, mind you, simply a logical first step the studio must take if Star Trek Beyond does in fact re-energize the property. We’ll find out for sure when it warps into theaters in this quadrant on July 22nd.
Directed by Justin Lin from a script by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, Star Trek Beyond features returning stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, John Cho and Anton Yelchin, along with franchise newcomers Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella.
