Supergirl renewed for second season and moving to The CW

May 12, 2016 by Ricky Church

For weeks Supergirl has been in limbo as CBS was biding its time for renewal, unsure whether or not to pick it back up. Then there was a recent rumour that CBS was considering moving it to The CW in order to lower production costs. This rumour has now been confirmed as Supergirl will be shifting to The CW for its second season.

With the move of networks is likely a move of location as well. It’s yet to be confirmed, but Supergirl will probably no longer film in Los Angeles, but in Vancouver, the same city Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are filmed. This would make the possibility of further crossovers between Supergirl and the other CW shows much more likely.

The move to CW is not surprising since Greg Berlanti executive produces the other CW shows as well as Supergirl. If it does move to Vancouver it would greatly lower production costs since Supergirl’s pilot cost around $14 million and it is estimated each episode cost around $3 million. What kind of impact this will have on production itself will remain to be seen, but hopefully it won’t impact it quite as much, especially once you consider The Flash has some very good visual effects for a superhero show on The CW, going so far as to having CG characters like Grodd and King Shark appear.

For now we’ll just have to wait for official confirmation from CBS, The CW and/or Greg Berlanti on what exactly this means for Supergirl going forward.
