Villordsutch counts down Your Sinclair’s Top 100 ZX Spectrum Games…
Yesterday we had the excellent Green Beret and today we arrive at our first from Hewson Consultants. Avalon was the game which was quite possibly the precursor for the Monkey Island classics; though interesting to look at and technically rather clever, number #91 in my humble opinion has a lot of explaining to do, for barging its way in front of Green Beret and RoboCop!
Hewson Consultants liked to deliver both quality and originality – this was reflected in their back-catalogue of games, which included Ranarama, Stormlord and Uridium. Within Avalon you control the astral projection of Maroc the mage, and it’s your quest to destroy Avelach, Lord of Chaos. With numerous rooms, enemies and spells you should expect to be here for some time. Hewson also introduced the ability to save your game mid-way through so you could return to your quest after bedtime.
With difficulty in collecting objects, lack of description in spells and a poor control of your avatar Avalon sits at a place within the Top 100 where in truth it doesn’t deserve too. However in its sequel Dragontorc these minor complaints are supposedly recertified.
