X-Men: Apocalypse debuted in the States this past Friday, with the latest instalment of Fox’s mutant superhero franchise enjoying an $80 million domestic opening over the four-day Memorial Day weekend, with $65.3 million of that coming from the Friday-Sunday period.
“We’re very happy with this result as we introduce new characters in the X-Men universe,” states Fox domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson. “And for us to be at this number globally already means we’re in good shape.”
X-Men: Apocalypse opened lower than Bryan Singer’s last X-Men offering X-Men: Days of Future Past, which grossed $110 million in its first four days, while February’s Deadpool set a franchise high with a three-day opening weekend of $132.4 million.

Apocalypse added a further $55.3 million from international markets, having opened a week earlier, and pushed its global haul to $265.8 million by close of play on Monday.
The X-Men also went head-to-head with Disney’s Alice Through the Looking Glass, with the Johnny Depp-headlined sequel grossing just $27 million between Friday and Sunday and a four-day total of $34.2 million. That’s a huge drop from the first movie, which pulled in $116 million when it opened back in 2010, with analysts citing poor word of mouth and bad press for Depp given Amber Heard’s allegations of assault as reasons for its dismal performance.
Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
