Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg talks Jessica Jones season 2 and The Defenders

August 13, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Although the second season of Marvel’s Jessica Jones isn’t likely to hit Netflix until 2018, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg was on hand at the Television Critics Association to discuss her plans for Krysten Ritter’s Jessica following her team up with Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist in next year’s The Defenders.

“We’ve started gathering and thinking about where we’re going,” said Rosenberg (via IGN). “We have a big job in front of us. The bar was set pretty high. We’ll continue to pull from [the Alias comic] if we can. David Tennant’s [Kilgrave], we’ll never create that again. That is one of the great iconic characters played by a profoundly talented actor. The objective is not to match that, not to try to do that again. [We’ll introduce] some new characters that are only interesting in how they relate to our existing characters. We can really get into some very interesting aspects of their characters and where they’re from, where they’re going, all these things. I’m super excited about that.”

On the possibility of Rachael Taylor’s Trish Walker taking on the mantle of Hellcat, Rosenberg replied that: “[There’s] always the promise. I mean, for me, the character of Trish is so rich, Hellcat or not. She’s already bad-ass. What’s most interesting to me is their relationship. You know, that friendship, that sisterhood. That’s the core of the show. That’s the core relationship of the show.”

Meanwhile, Rosenberg also spoke about Jessica’s inclusion in The Defenders, revealing that showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez have welcomed her input with regards to their treatment of the character: “My colleagues Marco Ramirez and Doug Petrie, who are doing Defenders, they’ve shared material. We’ve sat down for many conversations about what are they doing, what’s happening with Jessica? They want my input, they want all the different showrunners’ input on the characters that they’re most familiar with. . . . They enjoy collaboration, which is not always the case, and they listen, and we listen to them. We’re really trying to find a way to respond to the things that they want to do, and them to respond to the things we want to do. So far so good. It’s working out.”
