Ever since it was announced speculation has been ripe over Star Trek: Discovery, the new series being developed by Hannibal and American Gods‘ Bryan Fuller, particular over when exactly the series will take place. Speaking to Ain’t It Cool News, Fuller revealed several details regarding the show, including when exactly the series will take place.
Fuller said Discovery will take place in the Prime universe with the original timeline as opposed to the Kelvin universe featured in the latest Star Trek films. It will also take place about 10 years prior to Star Trek: The Original Series. “Really when we developed the story it could take place in either Prime or Kelvin so the timeline was relatively inconsequential. But there was the cleanliness of keeping our series independent of the films. That way we don’t have to track anything [happening in the movie universe] and they don’t have to track what we’re doing. And you can have two distinct universes — one where Sulu is straight and one where Sulu is gay,” Fuller said. Though the first season will revolve around new characters, there is potential for some Original characters to appear later on.
In addition, Fuller also revealed he and producer Alex Kurtzman have written the first episode while Nicholas Meyer, the director of several of the Original movies including The Wrath of Khan, has written the second episode. Fuller also spoke about the decision to make the first season only 13 episodes, saying “I would strongly recommend that we never do 26 episodes. I think it would fatigue the show. Ideally I would like to do 10 episodes. I think that’s a tighter story.”
The main character has also been revealed as a female lieutenant commander who will only be referred to as Number One. “When we introduce our protagonist, she is called ‘Number One’ in honour of Majel Barrett’s character in the original pilot (“The Cage,” which starred Jeffrey Hunter as Capt. Christopher Pike). And as we were first talking about the series, talking to CBS, we said initially we will only call this character Number One.” Viewers will, however, learn Number One’s real name before the end of the first season.
