Having introduced Ghost Rider to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the first half of season four, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will now turn its attention towards Life Model Decoys when it returns to ABC in January, and the show’s executive producers have been chatting to TV Line about switching gears for its ‘LMD’ arc.
“This year we’re getting to play with a lot of the toys that we’ve been hoping to play with,” said Jed Whedon. “We want everything to feel like its own mini world, and to have its own flavor. So we do think you’ll come into the next section [of episodes] and immediately feel like, ‘Oh, this is a different kind of story.’ So we’re excited about that.”
Executive producer Jeffrey Bell also commented on the decision to move away from the Spirit of Vengeance, stating that – in addition to “financial considerations”: “[Ghost Rider is] a lot for 22 [episodes], especially with everything else that we like and care about on the show. It would feel like one flavor over a long period of time, but we’ve certainly left it open [for his return].”
Whedon also teased a potential return for Ghost Rider, adding: “He is trapped in another place, which usually means that he’s not dead. We can go on a different journey, but we are still playing in the same world [as Ghost Rider], and these things could link up later in some way — maybe in thrilling fashion.”
