With Universal letting the rights lapse, Deadline is reporting that Paramount Pictures has snapped up the rights to Clifford the Big Red Dog, with Justin Malen (Bastards, Baywatch) penning the script for a live-action/CG animated hybrid adaptation.
Created by Norman Bridwell, Clifford the Big Red Dog launched in 1963 and “follows the adventures of Emily Elizabeth, a young denizen of a rural island community who gets a red puppy for her birthday that grows to the rather unusual size of 25 feet tall.”
The book series spawned 65-episode animated show on PBS, which ran between 2000 and 2003, and was followed by a 39-episode prequel series from 2003 to 2004. The movie rights were optioned by Universal Pictures in 2012, with Illumination Entertainment originally involved, and was initially slated to arrive in April of this year.
