Last month it was announced that Lionsgate has pulled The Divergent Series: Ascendant from its theatrical release schedule and is instead planning on producing a TV movie to wrap up the YA franchise. Speaking to Variety, Lionsgate’s Jon Feltheimer and Kevin Beggs have revealed that the plan is to use the TV movie to launch a first season of between 10 and 13 episodes, which could then potentially lead to more seasons.
“The performance of the last segment of the theatrical didn’t really create a situation where we could commit the production resources necessary to really make the production we needed,” said Beggs. “We got excited about the possibility of what the series could look like — resolving the novel in a season across 10 to 13 episodes and then expanding from there into multiple seasons. his is an example of what we call the virtuous cycle of content bouncing back and forth from TV and film. The economic upside on a long term series franchise is very substantial.”
At this point, there’s been no word on whether Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller will return for the TV movie, but if Lionsgate is planning multiple seasons then it would certainly be a surprise if they manage to keep the cast together.
