Back in March it was revealed that 20th Century Fox is developing a remake of the 1988 sci-fi buddy cop movie Alien Nation, and now comes word that the project has secured a director in Jeff Nichols, the filmmaker behind the likes of Take Shelter, Mud, Midnight Special and Loving. Nichols will also write the script, as well as producing alongside his Loving collaborators Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Sara Greene.
Alien Nation starred James Caan as a racially-insensitive police detective forced to partner up with an extraterrestrial police officer (Mandy Patinkin), a member of an alien race who came to earth to escape slavery and assimilated in Los Angeles. The film spawned a TV series, along with a number of made-for-TV movies.
Nichols’ latest movie Loving, stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga as an interracial couple arrested and imprisioned in 1950s Virginia, is set for release in the States this November.
