Tim Story to direct the Shaft reboot

January 22, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Deadline is reporting that Tim Story (Fantastic Four, Ride Along) has signed on to direct New Line Cinema’s Shaft reboot, which has been scripted by Kenya Barris (Black-ish) and Alex Barnow (The Goldbergs).

Although plot details are being kept under wraps, it is said that “the idea is to reinvigorate the franchise with a focus on the son of the cool private eye who always finds himself navigating the gray terrain between the law and organized crime in New York City.”

The original Shaft was released in 1971 and starred Richard Roundtree as private eye John Shaft. Roundtree returned for two sequels – Shaft’s Big Score and Shaft in Africa – along with a shortlived CBS TV series; he also reprised the role in 2000’s Shaft, which saw Samuel L. Jackson taking the lead as his nephew.
