Last week it was announced that Antoine Fuqua has vacated the director’s chair on Universal’s planned Scarface remake to focus on The Equalizer 2, and it looks like the studio is wasting little time in securing a replacement.
According to THR, Universal has identified a shortlist headed up by David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water) and Peter Berg (Deepwater Horizon). Mackenzie had previously been under consideration last year, but was passed over in favour of Fuqua.
The new Scarface has Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) attached to the lead role, which like both the 1932 and 1983 films, will follow an immigrant who turns to a life of crime in search of the American Dream. As revealed over the weekend, Joel and Ethan Coen are currently polishing the script, originally penned by Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire).
