It looks like Mel Gibson may have some competition for the director’s chair on Suicide Squad 2, as Jeff Sneider is claiming on Meet the Movie Press that Jaume Collet-Serra is also in the frame to helm the upcoming supervillain sequel.
Spanish filmmaker Collet-Serra recently directed Blake Lively in The Shallows, while his other credits include the Liam Neeson action thrillers Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night and the horrors House of Wax and Orphan.
With Suicide Squad director David Ayer moving on to the Harley Quinn-led Gotham City Sirens, Mel Gibson somewhat surprisingly emerged as the front-runner for the sequel last month, confirming that he has held talks with Warner Bros.
It has been reported today that Suicide Squad 2 is one of five DC films that could potentially shoot this year (the others being The Flash, Green Lantern Corps, Gotham City Sirens and Justice League Dark) having pushed back production on The Batman to 2018, and if Warner Bros. is planning to fast track the sequel, we should probably expect a director to be locked down soon.
