Jessie Robertson reviews the season 2 finale of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow…
Okay, the Legends all die (except Sara)…….
…..the future selves, at least. The ones we’ve gotten to know over the past two seasons, all dead. Luckily, the Legends decided to break the time rules and go back to a time they’ve already been to, which is a no-no never really explored before. I think this episode is evidence why; it gets really convoluted! The writers did a good job of distinguishing who’s who and there are some great interactions between the characters selves. But, it gets more violent than most other Legends shows when they are start getting picked apart by the Legion.
Let’s cut to the chase: this episode (and arguably this whole season) has been about Sara. Not exclusively, but in the over-arching beats, it’s been Sara’s journey. In the last episode, it was sort of in Amaya’s hands to use the spear; both that she wanted to and seemed to be the ideal person to make that choice. Tonight, Sara (both of them) are adamant the Spear should stay out of at least her hands, because he doesn’t trust the darkness inside herself. She’s seen it manifest too many times. But, the Legends, her friends, basically her family now, really only know this side of Sara. She’s a leader, she’s tough, she can handle opposition many times her power and is good under pressure. Yes, we know there’s a dark underbelly to her, I mean look at her life. But, this year has been about growth and I think one of the final scenes, where she actually uses the Spear and is taken to some random time in a destiny not yet written, where she is having a Movie & Wine night with her sister Laurel (who is just stunning here). It’s really a great moment that I think a lot of people were wanting to see happen, myself included. With Laurel, you get more of Sara’s vulnerable side; she questions why she shouldn’t go back and change those awful things. Laurel calms her and tells her to do what’s right and that she’ll always be around. That gives Sara the strength to do what she needs to do; not to destroy the Spear but to depower it so it can’t be used again. She had one more trick up her sleeve for Thawne; to release the Black Flash to dispatch him back into time.
9/10- A very fun, less confusing than you would think finale
This season has been much better than I thought I would be. I watched season one on Netflix and enjoyed moments of it, but it felt like the most prolonged story I’d ever seen. I had a bad feeling this season would feel much the same but the chemistry of the cast was quite fantastic this season and while there were some clunkers, this show has a distinct feel of being goofy and that is a good thing.
