ABC has announced a spinoff from the medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, with THR reporting that the network has placed a straight-to-series order for a new series based around a group of heroic firefighters.
Creator Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers will executive produce the spinoff, with Stacy McKee serving as showrunner, and the first episode will air as a planted episode of the main show, with THR speculating that it will likely be the season thirteen finale, which features an explosion at the hospital. As yet, there’s no word on an episode count for the season, or a launch date.
“No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey’s signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff,” said ABC president Channing Dungey as part of the official announcement.
The as-yet-untitled series marks the second spinoff from Grey’s Anatomy after Private Practice, which ran for six season between 2007 and 2013.
