It started as a meme based, but now it’s official: Rihanna and Lupita Nyong’o are set to star in a buddy comedy movie, which is being directed by Ava DuVernay (Selma) from a script by Issa Rae (Insecure).
The concept originated with the above Tumblr post of Rihanna and Nyong’o attending a Miu Miu fashion show in 2014. After going viral, Twitter users approached DuVernay and Rae to get involved with the crowd-sourced project, and now EW is reporting that Netflix has snapped up the rights to the project following very aggressive bidding at Cannes.
The site states that Rae has already started work on the screenplay, although it’s unclear how faithful it will remain to the original concept outlined in the Tumblr post, and that the plan is to go into production early in 2018 once DuVernay finishes work on Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time.
