Gambit solo movie still apparently part of Fox’s X-Men plans

June 8, 2017 by Gary Collinson

If you cast your mind back to 2014, you may recall that Channing Tatum signed on to produce and star in the X-Men spinoff movie Gambit, with 20th Century Fox even bringing him out on stage during San Diego Comic-Con 2015 as part of the studio’s X-Men roster.

Fast forward two years, and we’re still no closer to seeing the project become a reality. It’s gone through two directors in Rupert Wyatt and Doug Liman, and its proposed production start date was pushed back on several occasions before being seemingly forgotten about.

Well, according to X-Men producer Hutch Parker, the project remains part of the studio’s slate, with Parker telling Screen Rant that: “It is. It is [still part of our plans]. I don’t have any news on that but there’s still a desire and a passionate interest to see that movie made.”

Meanwhile, former director Doug Liman, who left the project in order to helm Warner Bros. Justice League Dark (a film he’s since departed too) has been chatting to IGN about the Gambit movie, and his hope that it does eventually see the light of day:

“You know, it’s a crowded field of superhero films so the challenge for Gambit or any of those other movies is finding its unique space and its unique take. But, yeah, I think Simon Kinberg, who is producing it, is a great producer and he’ll create something great out of it.”

Seeing as Fox is pushing ahead with X-Men: The New Mutants, Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, it would seem that Gambit is still a few years away, assuming the studio does ever manage to drag it out of development hell.
