While season 8 of HBO’s Game of Thrones may feature disappointingly few episodes (only six), the length of the episodes themselves may very well make up for it.
According to Game of Thrones’ sound designer Paula Fairfield, season 8 could have “feature-length” episodes. At the recent Con of Thrones, Fairfield told convention attendees that season 8 may feature “six movie-long episodes” clocking in at 80-90 minutes apiece.
If you do the math, that nearly equates to an entire season of Game of Thrones. Perhaps HBO is taking this approach due to the epic nature of the final season? For example, if season 8 is nothing but huge set-pieces, it is possible that the producers don’t want to continually break them up? Longer episodes would fix that issue.
It will be quite a while before we have have those answers about season 8, but luckily Game of Thrones season 7 premieres July 17th on HBO.
