Spider-Man: Homecoming spins $257 million opening weekend at the worldwide box office

July 9, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Homecoming has exceeded tracking projections with its opening weekend at the box office, pulling in a worldwide haul of $257 million.

Domestically, Homecoming has grossed $117 million across the Friday to Sunday period, giving Sony its second best ever debut behind Spider-Man 3’s $151.1 million back in 2007. Estimates had put it between $90 – $100 million.

The reboot also added a further $140 million from international markets, including $25.8 million in South Korea, $12 million in Mexico and $11.8 million in the UK. It is yet to open in many major territories, including China, France, Germany, Spain and Japan.

“Everyone at Sony and Marvel are thrilled,” said Josh Greenstein, Sony’s marketing chief. “It’s safe to say it’s a triumphant return for Spider-Man.”

In terms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Homecoming enjoyed the seventh biggest opening behind Iron Man 2 on $128.1 million. For comparison, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened to $146.5 million back in May.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Spider-Man: Homecoming sees Tom Holland and Marisa Tomei reprising their roles from Captain America: Civil War as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Aunt May, alongside Marvel veterans Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts and Chris Evans as Captain America. New additions to the cast include Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Michael Barbieri, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Angourie Rice, Michael Chernus, Michael Mando, Logan Marshall-Green and Jennifer Connelly.
