War for the Planet of the Apes, the third instalment of 20th Century Fox’s rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise has kicked off its box office run with a $102.5 million global opening.
The Matt Reeves-directed sequel pulled in $56.5 million domestically, dethroning Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. The opening weekend is up on Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ $54.8 million, but down on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ franchise high of $72.6 million.
Internationally, War grossed $46 million from 61 markets, and is on par with Dawn from the same locations. It is yet to open in many major markets, including France, Germany, Japan, South Korea and China.

In War for the Planet of the Apes, the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel. War for the Planet of the Apes sees Matt Reeves directing a cast that includes Andy Serkis, Woody Harrelson, Steve Zahn, Judy Greer, Karin Konoval, Terry Notary, Michael Adamthwaite, Gabriel Chavarria, Max Lloyd-Jones, Sara Canning, Amiah Miller, Aleks Paunovic and Chad Rook.
