Dunkirk beats Wonder Woman and Spider-Man: Homecoming at the UK box office

August 8, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Dunkirk has managed to earn more money at the UK box office than both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Wonder Woman.

This year’s box office has been dominated by superhero behemoths and Disney family movies, not unlike most years in recent memory.

The picture isn’t that different in the UK, with Beauty and the Beast sitting at the top of the year’s highest grossing films, ahead of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 in second.

But in news that will please fans of Christopher Nolan and more adult orientated dramas, Dunkirk has found itself at number eight in the list, and rising.

Having accumulated $35.4 million as of late July, this means that the WWII drama has out earned superhero blockbusters Wonder Woman ($28.9 million, Logan ($29.1 million), and Spider-Man: Homecoming ($31.8 million).

This is quite the achievement and speaks to Nolan’s popularity in the country, the film’s critical success, and the British nature of the film obviously appealing to movie goers.

And with Dunkirk certainly having brought in further cash since Box Office Mojo last updated their numbers, you can expect the movie to rise higher still.

It’s highly unlikely that Dunkirk can catch Beauty and the Beast on $80 million, but Guardians Vol. 2 with its $53 million isn’t all that far away.

It all depends on how long Nolan’s film continues to play.

“Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.”

Dunkirk sees Christopher Nolan directing a cast that includes Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack Lowden, James D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Tom Glynn-Carney and newcomer Fionn Whitehead.
