Tim Miller discusses his departure from Deadpool 2

September 28, 2017 by Gary Collinson

Back in October of last year came the somewhat surprising news that director Tim Miller had left the sequel to the smash hit superhero blockbuster Deadpool owing to creative differences with 20th Century Fox and producer and star Ryan Reynolds.

Miller, who had been so instrumental in bringing the Merc with a Mouth to the big screen, was subsequently replaced on Deadpool 2 by David Leitch (John Wick), and has since moved on to the upcoming Terminator reboot, which teams him with producer James Cameron. And now, during an interview with THR to discuss his new project, Miller spoke about his departure from Deadpool 2, and how he is excited at the opportunity his exit has afforded him with Terminator.

“I felt like there was more stories to tell [with Deadpool], but I’m happy that somebody else is telling them. There was a sense of relief in that I get to do something new versus Deadpool 2. I think it would’ve been a great movie, but it was also going to be a continuation of what we had done. [Terminator] really gave me a chance to do something new. I feel like there was so much more to be done with these [Terminator] characters. I mean, I wanted to make Deadpool 2. I was going to do that, until I wasn’t. So, there was that, which took up about seven months of my time. But even then, David [Ellison, who has the rights to the Terminator franchise] and I were talking, like after Deadpool 2, it was going to be this [Terminator].”

Deadpool 2 sees David Leitch (John Wick) directing a cast that includes returning stars Ryan Reynolds (Wade Wilson), Morena Baccarin (Vanessa), T.J. Miller (Weasel), Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead), Stefan Kapicic (Colossus), Leslie Uggams (Blind Al) and Karan Soni (Dopinder) alongside new additions Zazie Beetz (Atlanta) as Domino, Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) as Cable, Jack Kesy (The Strain) as the film’s villain, and Shioli Kutsuna (The Outsider), Eddie Marsan (Atomic Blonde) and Julian Dennison (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) in as-yet-unrevealed roles. It is set for release on June 1st 2018.
