Ben Mendelsohn up for Captain Marvel’s villain

October 25, 2017 by Ricky Church

As production gears up for Captain Marvel, the film may have found its villain. Variety is reporting that directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are in talks to reunite with Ben Mendelsohn, who previously worked with the pair on Mississippi Grind and is up for a role as the film’s central villain.

Variety doesn’t say who exactly he’d be playing, but the role would be the leader of the Skrulls, a shapeshifting alien race. Earlier this summer some concept art was shown off during Marvel’s panel at the San Diego Comic-Con showcasing Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel fighting against a group of Skrulls. Mendelsohn is also known for his villainous roles in The Dark Knight Rises and more recently as Director Krennic in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

This news comes shortly after the rumour last week that the Skrulls would also feature in next year’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Though the two are completely different cinematic universes owned by competing studios, both Marvel Studios and 20th Century Fox have the rights to use the Skrulls in their films. The rights issue is similar to how the character Quicksilver was featured in Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse, as well as Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Captain Marvel is set for release on March 8th, 2019.
