Thor: Ragnarok was originally going to feature a romance between Thor and Valkyrie

November 13, 2017 by Gary Collinson

When it was first revealed that Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster would be absent from Thor: Ragnarok, many assumed that Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie would be taking the spot of Thor’s new love interested in the Marvel blockbuster. However, as it turned out, that wasn’t the case – although screenwriter Eric Pearson has revealed to Yahoo! that it was originally intended for romance to be in the air.

“It was like, let’s give Valkyrie her own story that connects with Thor, and if it makes sense for them to get together, then great,” said Pearson. “You’ve got two really good-looking people who can fight and who’d probably be [good together] if the story went there, but it just didn’t. It became more about the mutual respect, and also dealing with her PTSD. She’s someone who’s drowning her sorrows in the bottle, and I just thought that was such a cool thing that you don’t often see in these movies: somebody dealing with extreme guilt and shame in a colorful, Taika Waititi[-directed] hilarious background.”

Were you disappointed that there was no romance between Thor and Valkyrie, or did you feel it made a refreshing change? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok—the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization—at the hands of an all-powerful threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger—the Incredible Hulk.

Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) and features a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall and Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, Cate Blanchett as Hela, Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie, Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster, Karl Urban as Skurge, Taika Waititi as Korg, Clancy Brown as Surtur, Rachel House as Topaz, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg and Zachary Levi as Fandral.
