Earlier this month it was announced that filming on season two of HBO’s acclaimed drama series Big Little Lies is slated to begin in the Spring of 2018, and now The Washington Post has revealed that director Jean-Marc Vallee won’t be returning to helm any further episodes.
Vallee – who directed the entire first season – had previously stated that “there is no reason to make a season two” and that the show had “the perfect ending”. However, while he’s opting against a return to the director’s chair, he will be staying on as a producer for the second season.
As yet, it’s undecided whether a single filmmaker will come on board to helm the entirety of season two, or if the producers will opt for multiple directors.
Based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, Big Little Lies starred Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Alexander Skarsgard, and was a huge success for HBO, picking up eight awards at the Primetime Emmys including Outstanding Limited Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series (Nicole Kidman).
