Back in September, during preparation for his upcoming Manson Family film #9, Quentin Tarantino revealed that he had an idea for a Star Trek movie, and that it “would be worth having a meeting about”.
Well, it seems he has had a meeting about it, with Deadline revealing that Tarantino has shared his idea with J.J. Abrams, producer on Paramount Pictures’ rebooted Trek universe, prompting Paramount to assemble a writers room to develop the idea. Should it work out, Tarantino may also take on directing duties, with Abrams – who is currently prepping Star Wars: Episode IX – serving as producer.
Although he’s toyed with the idea of a Luke Cage movie and a James Bond movie in the past, Tarantino has so far eschewed franchise filmmaking, preferring instead to work on his own projects (although he has helmed episodes of CSI and ER on the small screen). He’s also said on numerous occasions that he plans to call time on his directing career once he reaches ten movies, so perhaps he’s looking to check the box before he calls it a day.
At this point, it’s unclear whether this means Paramount has abandoned its ambitions for Star Trek 4, which would have seen Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Captain Kirk’s father George Kirk.
Tarantino is currently gearing up to shoot his latest movie, which takes place in 1969 and follows a TV actor looking to break into the movie business, set to the backdrop of the Manson Family murders. It is set for release on August 9th 2019, the 50th anniversary of the murder of actress Sharon Tate.
